List of Surnames: Islands in Hamburg, River Elbe
(With the exceptions of Finkenwerders, Moorwerders and
the formerly islands in the Elbe of Hannover)Of petrol Tafelsky
You can find the list of surnames when you make cultural and historical studies and you are searching in relevant archives. Our list has been limited to the agricultural era on the former islands in the Elbe. When the 19. century allowed the number of commercial enterprises to increase, this area experienced drastic changes in the last third. Many ports and industries was built. Because this the number of inhabitants was increasing very much and many new surnames will found.
Perhaps in the near future a scientific study targeting the origin of the aborigines could be undertaken. Some islands were regarded as "no dyke municipalities" with few settlers and a small population. The blossoming milk trade at the end of the 18 century enticed inhabitants of neighbouring islands and March Districts to establish communities. The proximity of the port and water also make that other business can exist. The business men could be come from the town.
Remarkably, national borders on the Islands of Lueneburg in the Elbe are no obstacle to immigrations. A large number of families from Wilhelmsburg met us.
Surnames are arranged alphabetically followed by given name. You will find both time and location of occurrence in parentheses. It is important to remember that not all name carriers are inhabitants, they may be owners or tenants that live elsewhere. Two or three years behind a name mean that this surname exist, it mean not a person.
Sources for this list include: Public documents/records from Hamburg and Schleswig, for the eastern islands in the Elbe, church books by St. George, Hamburg and St. Nikolai in Billwerder Moorfleet. In addition some printed literature is included.
